8.4.15 | First Teacher-Led Personalized Learning Day for SCPS

For the first time in recent memory, teachers in SCPS had the opportunity to personalize their required professional development hours by choosing a path for learning.  While many teachers chose some district-provided Project Based Learning (PBL) sessions or other options, more than 50 teachers attended the first SCPS Personalized Learning Conference.  On August 3, more than 15 teachers led sessions from Edtech integration to effective use of workshop structure.

Teachers attending reported loving the personalized feel where they could choose the sessions they attended.

11.1.13 | Regional and National Collaboration Grows Teachers

In a long-standing collaboration with the Ohio Valley Education Cooperative (OVEC) and the Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC, Denver, CO), for the first time, Shelby County Schools classrooms were used as regional demonstration lab classrooms for the bi-annual Thinking Strategies Institute.  Built on key instructional foundations of community, thinking strategies, workshop model and discourse, the Thinking Strategies Institute (TSI) deepens teacher pedagogy around best practices for deepening student understanding.

During this four day workshop, teachers from across the OVEC region have the opportunity to engage in classroom visits in Shelby County classrooms where "seeing is believing" as they explore beliefs and synthesize changes to practice.

For several years, Shelby County Schools has collaborated with PEBC, growing Instructional Coaches and teachers alike to facilitate and host lab visits.

12.9.16 Update:   TSI has sold-out registration with each institute since 2013.  In the spring of 2017, Shelby County and Franklin County are both serving as lab sites for the March TSI.

Early Math Institute

5.25.17| Early Math Institute

More than 80 teachers from preschool up through 2nd grade were invited to learn about Early Math and Developmental Learning Progressions in order to personalize learning for students.  Teachers learned about how students follow specific progressions as they develop number sense and considered how they might use the knowledge of progressions to design math workshops.  Many instructional and assessment resources were shared, and teachers came away with professional texts and/or resources to support their new learning!

First ever FCPS/SCPS Hosted Thinking Strategies Institute

3.17.17| Thinking Strategies Institute

The first regional collaboratively-hosted Thinking Strategies Institute was held March 14-17, 2017 at the Blair Center in Shelbyville.  The  Ohio Valley Education Cooperative (OVEC) and the Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC, Denver, CO) have been holding the Thinking Strategies Institute for the last four years using Shelby County Schools’ classrooms as peer labs for teachers to see the pillars of the institute in action. This March, Franklin County lab classrooms joined Shelby County classrooms in hosting the learning labs.

Teachers in the institute described the experience as “Rejuvenating”, “Reenergizing”, and “Reviving”.  We look forward to an on-going collaborative relationship to share best practices throughout the region.

Mathematical Success for ALL!

1.26.17 | Mathematical Success for ALL!

On January 25 and 26, teachers from elementary, middle and high schools engaged in professional learning around Mathematical Teaching Practices.  Dr. Debbie Thompson, Math Consultant at OVEC, led Ensuring Mathematical Success for ALL Students, a workshop designed based on the NCTM book, Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All (2014).  Shelby County math teachers reflected on teaching actions related to student actions and considered next steps for their practice.  These teacher leaders will support colleagues in utilizing effective mathematical teaching practices.  In Shelby County, we are always learning, anytime, anywhere!

Shelby County Writing Institute

5.19.17| Shelby County Writing Institute

From June 5-9, teachers from SCPS participated in the first Shelby County Writing Institute (SCWI) at the SCPS Central Office.  Teachers explored their own experience as writers in order to consider the practices in their own classroom to help students grow as writers. One of the key take aways was understanding how the Writer's Workshop is a natural fit with best practice and what conditions are necessary to create a learning environment. As writers, teachers experienced using Art to unlock writing and also used experience in community settings exploring using sensory images and life experiences to explore writing! Participants Anna Nickens and Mary Carmel Daugherty both said, “I didn’t want the week to end! I feel energized and empowered by this strong community of writers, and was able to take risks this week!” The writing institute participants will be involved in a year-long journey, as they explore writing workshop and live a writerly life.
